Poker is a card game in which players wager their chips on the outcome of a hand. The player with the best hand wins the pot. There are a variety of poker games, each with its own rules and strategy. The game can be played by two or more players.

Unlike other games, such as chess, where all the information is visible from the start, in a hand of poker some facts are revealed and others hidden. A player never has complete command of the situation until the hand is over. This mirrors real life, in which resources must be committed before the outcome is known. Professional poker players are adept at extracting signal from noise across multiple channels, including the social ones of their opponents, and integrating this information to both exploit opponents and protect themselves.

After the cards are dealt there is a round of betting, initiated by 2 mandatory bets called blinds placed in the pot by the players to the left of the dealer. During the course of this betting, the players’ hands develop, usually by being added to or replaced by cards from the community. Each player has the option to raise or call during his turn.

A winning poker hand is one that beats the other players’ best cards or makes a bluff that forces them to fold. However, it is not always the case that the highest hand wins; tenacity can overcome even the weakest starting cards.
